If You Don’t Know Where You’re Going, How Will You Know If You’ve Arrived?

Hi,

There’s an old saying: “If you don’t know where you’re going, you’ll never know if you’ve arrived”.

How often do we pause to reflect on where we’re headed? It’s easy to get caught up in familiar routines, responding to the demands of daily life, without ever asking: Am I actually moving in the direction I want to go?

Recently, I had to ask myself this very question about an interim project I was considering. It was an interesting opportunity, and I’m sure I would have enjoyed leading it. But when I looked closer, I realized that many other people could have done the role just as well — it wasn’t something uniquely suited to my skill set and life purpose. Thankfully, it didn’t work out. A few days later, a new opportunity landed — one that was completely aligned with my skills and life purpose.

The exercise outlined below is something I use for myself and with individuals and organizations I have the privilege of coaching.

A Deep Dive Into Visioning & Goal-Setting

This week, I invite you to take a deep dive into contemplative visioning — a process that helps you step back, reflect, and realign with what truly matters. This approach, originally developed by my friend and outstanding coach Brian Russell, is a powerful tool for anyone seeking clarity, whether in leadership, coaching, or personal growth.

Preparation:

  • Grab a cuppa and find a quiet space where you won’t be disturbed.
  • 🔹 Think back to the moment you said “Yes” to your mission, work, or purpose — what inspired you?
  • 🔹 Begin with silence — meditation, deep breathing, or quiet reflection.
  • 🔹 Allow space between each question to fully process your thoughts.

Guiding Questions for Reflection:

  • What is the unique contribution I am here to make in the world?
  • Who am I meant to serve, and how can I show up fully?
  • Who or what do I need to become to fully live out this vision?
  • What resources do I already have (within myself and my community) that can support this vision?
  • What is holding me back? What no longer serves me that I can release?
  • Am I truly open to this vision unfolding, even if it requires stepping outside my comfort zone?
  • What is my next small, intentional step toward this vision?

Why This Matters:

Imagine setting out on a journey with no destination in mind. You might travel for miles, but you’ll never be certain if you’re on the right path. The same is true in life. Without a clear vision, we risk spending our days busy but directionless. Taking time to reflect ensures we’re not just moving — but moving with purpose.

Your Challenge This Week:

✅ Set aside 15 minutes of uninterrupted time.

✅ Reflect on the questions above and write down your insights.

✅ Choose one small but meaningful step to move closer to your vision.

I’d love to hear — what stood out to you most from this practice?

Keep moving forward,

Mark
